Twelve porcelain birds were produced initially. The birds that followed were produced using earthenware. When production ceased in 1978, over a hundred different shapes and varieties had been made. Johann Martin Stangl died in 1972. In 1978, Frank Wheaton, Jr., bought Stangl and then sold it to Pflatzgraff Pottery. Pflatzgraff ended production.

Martin Stangl was a ceramic engineer first hired by Fulper in 1910. Stangl pottery closed in 1978. Stangl used paper and foil labels and also marked some of the output with an in-mold mark or number.
